Aluminum wiring was used extensively from the mid 1960’s – late 1970’s. Aluminum was used in place of standard copper wiring because of high copper pricing at the time. As time passed it was discovered that aluminum wiring at the connection or junction points can oxidize or rust. When these connection points oxidize, the connection becomes weak causing electrical hazards and possibly fires. Replacing aluminum wiring on a large project requires tearing open walls and extensive work which can cost millions of dollars and require tenants to move out while the work is being done. By using a process called aluminum remediation (aka pig-tailing) the concerns of aluminum wiring can be resolved and, in most cases, will satisfy the insurance and lenders that very often require the change.
